Worker safety is always one of the top priorities on any construction project. Construction workers face a variety of hazards on job sites, especially when safety protocols aren’t followed. Many of the risks can lead to serious injuries and even fatalities. Unfortunately, some of these accidents reported on job sites are fraudulent, and these schemes often involve crooked doctors and lawyers using workers as pawns to file fake claims.
The New York State Senate Bill S8413 aims to combat a disturbing rise in insurance fraud stemming from these phony construction accident claims.
The cost of insurance on construction projects has increased enormously. Insurance companies have to pay out large claims, and it affects everybody who is insured by these companies. Increased insurance costs ultimately lead to EVENTS 2024 higher construction costs, which can negatively impact the industry. Contractors and developers have become burdened with inflated insurance premiums.
The offenders of insurance fraud and staged accidents need to be punished.
Legislation will make the staging of a construction site accident for the purposes of insurance fraud a Class E felony. This act is certainly welcomed in protecting the integrity of our industry while hopefully deterring fraudulent claims.
In closing, I hope everyone had fun at the WC&C Spring Gala Dinner Dance on Saturday, April 6, at Terrace on the Park. Be well, stay safe and enjoy the upcoming summer season.
