As of this writing, we are coming out of the Annual Construction Safety Week (May 6 through May 10), and I’d like to discuss how imperative it is to prioritize and promote a safetyfirst culture. Construction Safety Week provides daily topics for discussion on the job site, including encouraging and welcoming workers to speak up about hazards. Individual choices, actions, communication and teamwork are what it takes to succeed in all safety practices. Nothing is more important than listening, understanding and implementing what is communicated on the job site.
One of the highest-rated accidents/incidents on job sites involves lifting and material handling. From carrying heavy loads to moving materials across the job site, these tasks are essential yet fundamentally hazardous. The injuries associated with lifting and material handling are typically more severe and more long term than any other injury as they involve musculoskeletal injuries.
When employees use smart lifting practices, they are less likely to suffer from back sprains, muscle pulls, wrist injuries, elbow injuries, spinal injuries and other injuries caused by lifting heavy objects. By empowering workers with proper training and education, companies can alleviate risks and encourage a safer working environment. Weekly Toolbox Talks are just one important way to educate employees, but safety management is a full-time responsibility. OSHA.gov is an excellent resource for education and training. They are committed to giving employers and workers the knowledge and tools they need to comply with their obligations and stay safe. Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI) is another resource to get an exceptional learning experience. Go to www.awci.org/education for more information on educational programs.
Together, we are building a safer and stronger industry. Continue to stay safe and enjoy the summer season.
